SUB-PROJECTS/ Statcom Prototype

STATCOM is the static equivalent of conventional rotary Reactive Power Compensation System which is an idle synchronous motor known as SYNCHRONOUS CONDENSER, designed with the use of power semiconductors. STATCOM can generate reactive power both in inductive and capacitive regions, and also it has the ability of responding quickly to the Reactive Power changes in electricity system or loads in (5- ms- a few hundreds).

Main functions of STATCOM systems can be summarized in that way:

1. Controlling the reactive power flow,

2. Regulating the voltage on the point it is connected to,

3. Increasing transient and dynamic stability limits in the Electricity System

Within this sub-project, research and technology development activities will be carried out for a STATCOM System with ±50 MVAr installed capacity which will be connected to 400 kV or 154 kV busbar by means of coupling transformer; and a prototype system will be implemented. For this purpose, a standard 10 MVAr unit will be developed, and ±50 MVAr capacity will be achieved by paralleling five of them. This STATCOM Prototype will be designed by considering the electrical features of available 400 kV and 154 kV busbars in the Turkish Transmission System, and since it consists of generalized standard 10 MVAr units, it will be a modular system. By the way, in the case of elimination of the needs at one point, it will be easily taken apart and connected to the other point requiring it; as a result, it will be a relocatable system. It will be a unique system of multi-pulse, multi-level, and Voltage Sourced Inverter based.

The developed STATCOM voltage fluctuations will be connected to a TEIAS busbar which has power flow problem due to voltage fluctuations, and it will primarily function as a Voltage Regulator.

Furthermore, with the help of regulations to be made in the control system, it will contribute to the increase in Transient and Dynamic Stability Limits in Electricity System.

Together with the technical features mentioned above, this system will also be in a relocatable form which will enable it to be transferred to another problematic point in the case that the need in the work place disappears. Since the original design will be made by taking the needs of Turkish Electricity System into account, a generalized system will be revealed, and it will be generated sufficiently according to the demand of TEIAS in the future. It is planned that the first STATCOM Prototype, preliminary design of it will be carried out within this project, have ±5 x 10 MVAr power factor to be connected to 154 kV busbar. If necessary, the power of this prototype will be increased or decreased by paralleling 10 MVAr units. The system will be a multi-pulse or multi-level unique one with the base of Voltage-Sourced-Inverter. Due to the STATCOM voltage fluctuations, it will be connected to a TEIAS busbar which has a power flow problem and it will function as voltage regulator.

In addition to the technical features of it, this system will be a relocatable one to be transmitted to the other problematic points in the case there is no need in a specific working area. Since the original design will be carried out by considering the needs of the Turkish Electricity System, it will be a generalized system and produced later on at the sufficient amount in accordance with the demand of TEIAS.
