SUB-PROJECTS / Electronic Surge Arrester Meters

At the time of switching on and off the transformers and the lines in the Electricity Transmission System, transient overvoltage parameters occur while fault currents and capacitive/small inductive currents are being interrupted. In order to eliminate the adverse effects of overvoltages on the Transmission System and to protect the elements of the circuit against overvoltage, it is necessary that counter measures be taken.

In the case of lightning fall directly on phase conductor, transformer substation, or near by, overvoltage and current parameters with very high amplitude appear. These parameters negatively affect Power Quality parameters in the Transmission System. At the same time, they cause transient or permanent damage on the elements of circuit. So as to be protected against those negative effects explained above, it is essential that surge arresters which have proper technical features should be placed at the proper points.

In the voltages which occur during the events such as switching and lightning fall, it is essential that information be obtained about voltage amplitude and duration, and surge arrester's ability to absorb arising energy.

Besides, when such kind of an event has occurred, it is crucial that information about the time when the event took place be known and we should be informed about the values of the magnitudes emerging at the moment of that event so as to determine necessary counter measures. Therefore, it has been planned that those magnitudes be measured with electronic surge arresters, infrastructure of electronic surge arrester necessary for taking counter measures be provided, and also necessary research studies be made.

Thanks to the feature of the selected surge arrester, surge arresters in the process will also be monitored continuously and in this way, the information about whether there is a fault or not will be obtained.

At the same time, it is also important that surge arresters should be selected in the proper type and technical feature. It is quite essential that the amplitude of switching or lightning overvoltages and their energy values in terms of kJ should be known. Moreover, detecting the magnitudes of parameters affecting power quality particularly after a lightning fall based on the measurement will provide an important data for the correct selection of surge arresters –the ones in the process now and the others to be set up in the future. By the way, it will also be useful in determining the frequency of lightning fall and the lightning energy values. In this way, a statistical lightning database based on the measurement will be composed.
